For the European Day of Jewish Culture we created an Augmented Reality rendition of a traditional 19th century 'lighting of the Shabbat candle' ritual. Using an almost life-like character (based on Frida Finkelstein from 19th century Poland) and realistic looking props we were able to recreate this quintessential Jewish tradition in an immersive and historically accurate way. The 3d printed candle holders functioned as triggers for the whole AR-driven cultural heritage experience to unfold. Visitors of the Jewish Cultural Center in Ljubljana were amazed by the high levels of realism and the full 360 AR experience. CtrlArt developed an Augmented Reality experience in collaboration with the Jewish Community of Slovenia to honor the tradition of lighting Shabbat candles. Through immersive AR, users can witness and participate in this meaningful ritual, connecting spiritual practice with modern technology. The project serves both as an educational tool and a cultural bridge—preserving Jewish heritage, offering young audiences a way to learn traditions interactively, and presenting Slovenia’s Jewish community within a broader cultural dialogue.
The experience invites users to place a virtual table with candles in their space, follow the blessing and ritual gestures, and understand the cultural significance of welcoming Shabbat. By merging faith, tradition, and innovation, this AR project embodies CtrlArt’s mission to create meaningful digital experiences rooted in history and identity.
